Pine Wood
Derby

The Pine Wood Derby begins with getting your starter kit.
This includes a block of pine with axle grooves and four tires and axles.
At that point it is the scout (with Akela guidance) working on the car
to shape it the way he wants. Please familiarize yourself with the official
rules ahead of time.
There will be a test track night. At that point you can
get your car officially weighed and run it to see if it runs straight
or far enough. We always need workers to set up the track and church the
night before the actual derby and that is another good chance to see how
fast your car runs.
On actual Pine Wood Derby day, make sure you bring some
extra cash. The Web IIs will be selling concessions to help pay for their
Arrow of Light arrows. Once the car is checked in, there will be no more
modifying it. At that point the car will be impounded and can only be
removed to race.
Each car will race six times. Cars can win three places
in three categories: Speed (based on an average time of all six races),
Beauty (based on a panel of judges), and Originality (also based on the
panel of judges). Beauty and Originality cars must fit all rules for racing
and must actually make it to the finish line in at least one race to qualify.
Cars that win will then move on to the regional race.
Akela, are you itching to race your own car? Your cub scout
won't let you play with his? Then build your own. Siblings can too. Halfway
during the race there will be an intermission. During this time it is
time for non-cub scouts to race their cars.
All in all, this is one of the most fun days in cub scouts.
So get ready, set, GO!
