The Bobcat Badge

This is the first rank a cub scout earns - no matter what age they join the pack. In order to earn this rank, the scout must meet these requirements. Once the scout has learned these things, tell your den leader.

1. Learn and say the CUB SCOUT PROMISE and complete the Honesty Character Connection.

I .....(name).... promise to do my best
To do my duty to God and my country,
To help other people, and
To obey the Law of the Pack.

a.Know: What is a promise? What does honesty mean? What does it mean to "do your best?"
b.Commit: Why is a promise important? Why is it important for people to trust you when you give your word? When might it be difficult to keep your word?
c.Practice: How can you do your best to be honest when you are doing the activities in Cub Scouting?

2.Say the LAW OF THE PACK. Tell what it means (Akela means cub scout leader).

The Cub Scout follows Akela.
The Cub Scout helps the pack go.
The pack helps the Cub Scout Grow.
The Cub Scout gives goodwill.

3.Tell what WEBELOS means:

WE'll BE LOyal Scouts

4.Show the CUB SCOUT SIGN. Tell what it means.

The scout sign is your right hand raised with your index finger and middle finger making a V.

The two fingers are to remind you of the two parts of the Promise - "to help other people" and "to obey." They look like a wolf's ears ready to listen to Akela. Give the Cub Scout Sign when you say the Cub Scout Promise or the Law of the Pack.

5.Say the CUB SCOUT MOTTO.

Do Your Best

6.Show the CUB SCOUT HANDSHAKE. Tell what it means.

The handshake is done by putting the index and middle fingers of the right hand against the other person's wrist when shaking hands. It means that you help and obey the law of the pack.

7.Give the CUB SCOUT SALUTE. Tell what it means.

The scout salute is performed by placing your right hand index finger and middle finger together and bringing them up to your forehead or the brim of your hat.

The salute is used to respect your leaders and the American flag.

8.With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the booklet, How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse.

When a scout earns the Bobcat, there will be a ceremony where he will get painted with blue and gold and recognized in front of everyone!
